Henri Gastaut (* 1915 in Monaco; † 1995) war ein französischer Neurologe.

Leben

Henri Gastaut studierte Neurologie und Neuroanatomie an der Universität Marseille, wo er 1945 promovierte. 1953 wurde er Direktor der neurobiologischen Laboratorien.

1954 wurde er Professor für Pathologie und 1960 Direktor des regionalen Zentrums für epileptische Kinder. 1973 wurde ein Lehrstuhl für klinische Neurophysiologie für ihn errichtet. Diese Stellung hatte er bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1984 inne.

Leistungen

Seine Hauptforschungsinteressen waren die Elektroenzephalografie und die Hirnfunktionen bei der Epilepsie. Das Lennox-Gastaut-Syndrom wurde nach den William G. Lennox (Boston) und Gastaut benannt, die diese Form der Epilepsie in den 1950er Jahren (ab 1945) erstmals eingehend unter wissenschaftlichen Gesichtspunkten beschrieben und sich intensiv mit ihrer Erforschung und Abgrenzung zu anderen Formen der Epilepsie befassten.

Von 1957 bis 1968 war Gastaut Generalsekretär, von 1969 bis 1973 Präsident der International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE).
