Mit seinem Debütroman Der Strand gelang Garland 1996 auf Anhieb der Durchbruch. Dieses Werk wurde ebenso wie sein zweiter Roman Manila verfilmt.

Für den Regisseur von Der Strand, Danny Boyle, verfasste Garland die Drehbücher zum Endzeit-Horror-Film 28 Days Later sowie zum Science-Fiction-Film Sunshine.
