Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) ist ein internationales Netzwerk mit der Aufgabe, Informationen zur Biodiversität aus zahlreichen Datenbanken in einem zentralen Portal zusammenzufassen. Das Ziel ist, die Informationen über alle Arten der Erde frei zugänglich zu machen. Für die Zukunft ist geplant genetische Datenbanken zu integrieren. GBIF soll die Frage klären: Welche Arten hat es wann und wo gegeben.
Mit 58 Mitgliedern in 34 Ländern[1], 194 Datenanbietern[2], 981 angeschlossenen Datenbanken[3] und fast 120 Millionen Einzeldaten, die über Internet zugänglich sind, ist GBIF heute das größte Biodiversitätsprojekt der Welt.
GBIF besteht aus einem Sekretariat in Kopenhagen und aus über 50 so genannten Daten-Knoten[4]. Das Sekretariat koordiniert die Arbeiten der geografisch weit verstreuten Knoten und verwaltet die zentrale Datenbank. In jedem angeschlossenen Land gibt es mindestens einen Knoten, der die Aufgabe hat, die Biodiversitätsdaten des Landes an die zentrale Datenbank weiterzuleiten.
