Global State of Waveland ist der Name einer Aktion der Umweltschutzorganisation Greenpeace. Die 450 km nordwestlich vor der schottischen Küste im Atlantik liegende Felsinsel Rockall wurde vom 10. Juni bis zum 28. Juli 1997 von Greenpeace-Aktivisten medienwirksam besetzt und ein „globaler Staat“ namens Waveland ausgerufen.

Ziel und Ende des Projekts

Zweck der Aktion war es, die Erdölförderung in der Region zu verhindern, aus Gründen des Umweltschutzes. Die Insel liegt an der sogenannten Atlantikgrenze, an der sich Irland, Island, Großbritannien und Dänemark um Förder- und Fischfangrechte streiten. Von den Besetzern wurden Briefmarken herausgebracht und Geldscheine gedruckt. Ungefähr 15.000 Sympathisanten aus aller Welt erstanden Zertifikate für eine Staatsbürgerschaft. Nach der Insolvenz des Sponsors des Projekts, Knowhouse, endete das nun im „Exil“ arbeitende Projekt im Februar 1999.
