Auf einer Fläche von 1.736 km² leben 44.450 Einwohner (Stand 2001). Sitz der Gemeindeverwaltung ist Komga.[1]
Der Gemeindename basiert auf dem Great Kei River. Das Khoi-Wort Kei bedeutet „Sand“. Der „große sandige Fluss“ ist der größte Fluss in der Gemeinde.[2]
