Mit dem Projekt Green Goal (Grünes Tor) wollte die FIFA erstmals zur Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2006 in Deutschland ein Vorreiter in Sachen Umweltschonung bei Fußballgroßveranstaltungen sein.

Mit Green Goal wollte man zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte des Fußballsports versuchen, dem Umweltschutz eine bedeutende Rolle zukommen lassen. Hierzu wurden die Getränke in allen WM-Stadien aus Pfandbechern gegeben. Des Weiteren gab es ein Mülltrennungssystem für die Abfälle im Stadion und um das Stadion. Darüber hinaus waren die Verkehrsanbindung für die Besucher sowie die Reduzierung des Energieverbrauchs der Stadien und der sparsame Umgang mit dem Wasser wesentliche Bestandteile des Green-Goal-Projektes. Die Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) erhielten deshalb im Rahmen von Green Goal vor der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft zwei Wasserstoffbusse, die dazu beitragen sollten, den öffentlichen Personennahverkehr während des Turniers „sauber zu machen“.[1]
