Group 3G

Die Group 3G ist/war ein Konsortium der spanischen Telefónica Móviles (57,2%iger Anteil) und der finnischen Sonera (heute TeliaSonera) (42,8%iger Anteil) mit Sitz in München.

Das Gemeinschaftsunternehmen ersteigerte im August 2000 eine der sechs deutschen UMTS-Lizenzen für 16,45 Milliarden DM.

Selbstgestecktes Ziel der Group 3G war es, zu einem Schlüsselanbieter in der mobilen Breitbandkommunikation (UMTS) zu werden.

Um Kostenvorteile zu erreichen, ging die Group 3G Kooperationen mit dem Konkurrenten E-Plus beim UMTS-Netzaufbau ein.

Am 22. November 2001 schritt Group 3G mit der Marke Quam aktiv in den deutschen Mobilfunkmarkt ein. Der Betreiber hatte am 13. März 2002 ca. 75.000 Kunden und im Juni etwa 200.000 Kunden, bevor am 15. Oktober das endgültige Ende des damaligen Angebots zum 15./16. November 2002 bekannt gegeben wurde. 2005 und 2006 gab es, verursacht durch die Übernahme von O₂ durch die Telefónica, vereinzelt Spekulationen über einen Relaunch von Quam.

Die zurückgegebenen UMTS-Frequenzblöcke wurden 2010 erneut versteigert.
