John Armstrong (* 1709 in Roxburghshire; † 7. September 1779 in Covent Garden) war ein schottischer Arzt und Dichter.

Armstrong studierte Medizin in Edinburgh, ließ sich dann als praktischer Arzt in London nieder, ward 1749 Hospitalarzt daselbst und fungierte 1760-63 als Arzt bei der englischen Armee in Deutschland. Er starb am 7. September 1779.

Sein Lehrgedicht The art of preserving health: a poem in 4 books (London 1744; deutsch Leipzig ) behandelt einen wenig poetischen Stoff in nüchterner Weise, fand aber wegen der Korrektheit der Sprache Beifall. Von seinen übrigen Schriften verdient noch das Gedicht The Oeconomy of Love (1739, geändert 1768) Erwähnung.

Unter dem Pseudonym Launcelot Temple gab er Sketches or essays on Various subjects (1758) heraus. Auch veröffentlichte er Miscellanies (1770, 2 Bde.). Eine neue Ausgabe seiner Gedichte besorgte George Gilfillan (1859).
