John Luther Adams (* 23. Januar 1953 in Meridian, Mississippi) ist ein US-amerikanischer Komponist.

Leben
Adams besuchte in den frühen 1970er Jahren das Cal Arts College in Kalifornien und studierte bei James Teanney und Leonard Stein. Er wurde dort auf Komponisten wie Lois V. Vierk und Peter Garland aufmerksam. Nach seinem Abschluss arbeitete Adams in Umweltschutzorganisationen. Dadurch kam er 1975 nach Alaska, wo er seit 1978 seinen Lebensmittelpunkt hat.
Musik
Seine Musik gilt als von den Landschaften Alaskas geprägt. Wie viele Komponisten seiner Generation fand er auf Umwegen zur klassischen Musik. Seine musikalische Karriere begann als Schlagzeuger in einer Rockband. Er lernte dann die Musik Frank Zappas kennen. Durch dessen Musik entdeckte er Edgar Varèse und John Cage. Zu seiner Berufung als Komponist fand er, als er Morton Feldman zum ersten Mal hörte.
Die CD Clouds of Forgetting, Clouds of Unknowing (1997) war für den Grammy 1999 nominiert in der Kategorie "Best Classical Contemporary Composition and Best Orchestral Performance".
