John Thelwall (* 27. Juli 1764 in Covent Garden, London; † 17. Februar 1834[1]) war ein radikalpolitischer britischer Redner und Autor.

Leben und Werk

Thelwall entstammte einer walisischen Familie und war der Sohn eines Seidenhändlers.

1792 war Thelwall maßgeblich an der Gründung der London Corresponding Society beteiligt. Sein dortiges Wirken, aber vor allem seine Veröffentlichungen, brachten ihm 1794 eine Anklage wegen Hochverrat ein. Gleichzeitig mit ihm wurden die ebenfalls radikal ausgerichteten John Horne Tooke und Thomas Hardy. Die Gerichtsverhandlung wurde äußerst kontrovers diskutiert, vor allem als diese mit einem Freispruch für alle drei endete. Da ihn ein Teil der britischen Regierung weiterhin für eine sehr gefährliche Person hielt, war Thelwall auch fortan Repressalien ausgesetzt.

Zwischen 1795 und 1796 veröffentlichte Thelwall regelmäßig die Zeitschrift The Tribune, in der er vor allem seine eigenen politischen Ansichten der Allgemeinheit kundtun konnte.

1816 starb Thelwalls erste Ehefrau und drei Jahre später heiratete er in zweiter Ehe Cecile Boyle. Dies verfasste später dessen Biographie „The life of John Thelwall“.

Rezeption

Eine seiner bekanntesten Thesen beinhaltet seine Kampfansage an alle Kriege, ausgenommen der Verteidigungskriege.
