Laccadive Islands

Die Lakkadiven sind eine Inselgruppe im Arabischen Meer und bilden gemeinsam mit den Amindiven und Minicoy (Maliku) das indische Unionsterritorium Lakshadweep. Sie umfasst die vier bewohnten Inseln Andrott (4,84 km²), Kavaratti (4,22 km²), Agatti (3,84 km²) und Kalpeni (2,79 km²) sowie einige kleinere, unbewohnte Eilande. Die Einwohnerzahl beträgt rund 32.200 (Stand: Volkszählung 2001). Kavaratti ist der Sitz der zentralen Verwaltung des Unionsterritoriums.

Häufig wird die geografische Bezeichnung „Lakkadiven“ mit der Verwaltungseinheit Lakshadweep gleichgesetzt. Zu Lakshadweep gehören aber neben den Lakkadiven auch die nördlich gelegenen Amindiven und die südlich gelegene, durch den Neun-Grad-Kanal getrennte Insel Minicoy (Maliku).
