Lebow

Fred Lebow (* 6. Juni 1932 als Fischel Lebowitz in Arad, Rumänien; † 9. Oktober 1994 in New York City) war ein rumänisch-amerikanischer Marathonläufer, der den New-York-City-Marathon und andere Läufe in New York City organisierte.

Von 1970 bis 1993 war er der Renndirektor des New-York-City-Marathons. Innerhalb weniger Jahre machte er aus dieser lokalen Laufveranstaltung einen der bedeutendsten Marathons der Welt.

1990 wurde bei ihm ein Gehirntumor festgestellt. 1992 erfüllte er sich einen letzten großen Wunsch: Er lief "seinen" Marathon zusammen mit der neunfachen Siegerin Grete Waitz.

Fred Lebow starb am 9. Oktober 1994 an Krebs, sechs Wochen nachdem ihn der US-Leichtathletikverband in seine Hall of Fame aufgenommen hatte. Ihm zu Ehren gibt es ein Denkmal nahe der Tavern on the Green im Central Park, in der Nähe der Ziellinie des New-York-City-Marathons.
