Die Trafalgar-Statue, die zu Ehren des siegreichen Admirals Lord Nelson 1843 am Londoner Trafalgar Square errichtet wurde, ist zugleich ein nationales Denkmal und ein Wahrzeichen der britischen Hauptstadt.

Nelsons Denkmal, vom britischen Bildhauer Edward Hodges Bailey aus Granit gemeißelt, ist von monumentaler Größe. Die Säule, auf der der Nationalheld von weitem zum Blickfang wird, ist für sich genommen 56 m hoch, das entspricht der Masthöhe des vom Admiral seinerzeit genutzten Flaggschiffs Victory. Die eigentliche Darstellung Nelsons selbst ist 5,50 m hoch.

Trotz Rückgangs der Luftverschmutzung in London musste 2006 zum dritten Mal eine Einrüstung und Grundsanierung des Denkmals vorgenommen werden. Die Pressefotos mit Nahaufnahmen des Kolosses schafften es im Mai 2006 mühelos auf die Titelseite selbst überregionaler Qualitätszeitungen wie z.B. der SZ. Die Kosten der notwendigen Erhaltungsarbeiten beliefen sich auf mehrere hunderttausend Pfund Sterling. Die Verursachung wurde aktuell vor allem zwei Faktoren zugeschrieben: dem aggressiven Kot von Möwen und Tauben zum einen, andererseits den durch die hohe Verkehrsbelastung bedingten Autoabgasen.

Der irische Dichter Louis MacNeice hat der Nelson-Verehrung der Briten mittels Monumentalstatuen satirisch-spöttische Verse gewidmet:

„And Nelson on his pillar - watching his world collapse.“
