2K Boston ist ein Spieleentwickler, der 1997 von drei ehemaligen Mitarbeitern von den Looking Glass Studios in Boston, Massachusetts, als Irrational Games gegründet wurde. Ken Levine, Jonathan Chey und Robert Fermier sind noch heute in der Studioleitung tätig.

Der Publisher Take 2 Interactive gab am 9. Januar 2006 den Kauf von Irrational bekannt. Dies hat zur Folge, dass die von Irrational produzierten Spiele folglich unter dem 2K-Label vermarktet werden.

Irrational betreibt zwei Studios, eines in Quincy (Massachusetts, in der Nähe von Boston), und eines in der australischen Hauptstadt Canberra, das mit Wirkung zum 10. August 2007 in 2K Australia umbenannt wurde.

  • 2005 – Das Studio Boston zieht von Boston nach Quincy um, wo größere Büroflächen vorhanden sind; das Studio behält den Namen „Irrational Games Boston“
  • 2006 – Irrational wird von Take 2 aufgekauft[1]
  • 2007 – kurz vor dem Release von BioShock am 24. August wird Irrational am 10. August in 2K Boston und 2K Australia umbenannt[2]

Das Studio Boston produziert Bioshock mit dem Studio Canberra zusammen. Bioshock wird als „geistiger Nachfolger“ von System Shock 2 angesehen, auch wenn der originale Name aufgrund von Urheberrechtsproblemen nicht verwendet werden darf.
