Nibble

Ein Nibble (selten: Nybble) ist eine Datenmenge, die 4 Bits umfasst, es wird auch Halbbyte, Tetrade oder Quadrupel genannt.

Die Bezeichnung basiert auf dem englischen Verb to nibble („anknabbern“, „einen kleinen Bissen nehmen“) und der phonetischen Ähnlichkeit von bite („beißen“, „Bissen“) und byte. Das Wortspiel „to nibble = to take half a bite“ führte zu dieser Bezeichnung.

Die sechzehn Werte des Nibble umfassen den Wertebereich von null (binär 0000) bis fünfzehn (binär 1111) und können bequem mit den Hexadezimalziffern von 0hex bis Fhex bezeichnet werden.
Hier liegt auch der Grund für die „Verstoßung“ des Oktalsystems mit den Ziffern 0okt bis 7okt (für jeweils drei Binärstellen) – vorderes und hinteres Halbbyte waren z. B. trotz Identität aufgrund der oktalen Zahlendarstellung nicht sofort als solche erkennbar:
273okt = 10111011bin = BBhex (= 187dec).

Die Hälfte eines Nibble wird auch Crumb (engl. für Brösel) genannt. Ein Crumb umfasst also zwei Bits. Diese Bezeichnung ist aber sehr selten anzutreffen, weil Bits selten in Zweierblöcken dargestellt werden.
