Off the Wall ist Michael Jacksons fünftes Studioalbum und zugleich sein erstes Soloalbum seit dem Wechsel zum Konzernriesen CBS. Es wurde am 10. August 1979 von Epic Records veröffentlicht. Produziert wurde es von Quincy Jones. Es wurde international schätzungsweise 20 Millionen Mal, davon in den USA 8 Millionen Mal verkauft. Damit war es das bis dahin erfolgreichste Album eines schwarzen Künstlers.

Künstlerische Bewertung

Off the Wall lancierten Jackson und Quincy Jones als erfolgreiches Team. Zuvor war befürchtet worden, Jacksons Karriere sei durch seinen Weggang von Motown 1975 bereits verloren und Jones passe wegen seiner ausgeprägten Funk-Orientierung nicht zu Jackson. Doch solche Sorgen wurden schnell zerstreut: Das Album wurde als Jacksons bis dahin bestes Werk angesehen, und auch danach wurde es künstlerisch einzig von seinem Nachfolger Thriller übertroffen, dem bis heute meistverkauften Album der Welt [1]. Off the Wall ist bereits Jacksons letztes Album, das ausschließlich „schwarze Musik“ enthält. Daher wird es von vielen, vor allem schwarzen, Zuhörern noch höher als das kommerziell erfolgreichere Nachfolgealbum bewertet.

Kommerzieller Erfolg

Off the Wall verkaufte sich in den USA und international sehr gut und übertraf die diesbezüglichen Erwartungen deutlich. Es erreichte Rang 3 der US-Hitparade und hielt sich 48 Wochen in deren Top 20. In Großbritannien erreichte es Rang 5. Die Musikzeitschrift Rolling Stone wählte Off the Wall auf Rang 68 der 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time.

Trotzdem war Jackson enttäuscht, vor allem da er 1980 mit nur einem Grammy ausgezeichnet wurde. Es war dies der Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, welcher ihm für Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough zugesprochen wurde.

Die beiden Singles Don’t Stop 'Til You Get Enough und Rock With You wurden die Nummer Eins der US-Hitparade. Auch die restlichen zwei Auskopplungen, She’s Out of My Life sowie der Titelsong, konnten sich in den Top Ten platzieren. Das war in den USA zuvor noch bei keinem Album der Fall gewesen.

In Europa kam die Single Off The Wall zu dem Zeitpunkt heraus, als in den USA Rock With You auf den Markt kam. Umgekehrt wurde der Titel Rock With You in Europa dann veröffentlicht, als in den Vereinigten Staaten Off The Wall als Single erschien.

Special Edition 2001

Seit 2001 wird nur noch die Special Edition vertrieben. Sie enthält zusätzlich Audio-Kommentare von Quincy Jones und Rod Temperton sowie folgende Bonus Tracks:

  • Don’t Stop 'Til You Get Enough (Michael Jackson’s original demo recording)
  • Workin' Day and Night (Michael Jackson’s original demo recording)

  • Off the Wall wurde vom 4. Dezember 1978 bis 3. Juni 1979 im Allen Zentz Recording, Westlake Audio und den Cherokee Studios aufgenommen. Abgemischt wurde im Westlake Audio, Los Angeles.
