Paolo Giovio (* 19. April 1483 in Como; † 11. Dezember 1552 in Florenz; latinisiert: Paulus Iovius) war ein italienischer Geschichtsschreiber, katholischer Bischof und Arzt.

Paolo Giovio hatte einen jüngeren Bruder, Benedetto Giovio, der ebenfalls Geschichtsschreiber war.

Giovio studierte in Padua Philosophie und in Pavia Medizin, praktizierte zuerst in Como, dann in Mailand als Arzt, ging 1517 nach Rom, wo er von Clemens VII. zum Bischof von Nocera ernannt wurde.

Seine Werke sind unter anderem:

  • Historiarum sui temporis libri XLV, die Geschichte seiner Zeit 1494–1547 (italienisch von Domenichi, Flor. 1551–53, 2 Bde.)
  • Vitae virorum illustrium (italienisch von Ludovico Domenichi, das. 1549–47, 7 Bde.)
  • Seine Briefe gab Ludovico Domenichi heraus (Lettere volgaredi Paolo G., Vened. 1560).

Schon 1546, drei Jahre nach dem Tod von Nikolaus Kopernikus, verfasste er eine Biographie über den Astronomen.[1]

Giovio hatte in seiner Villa in Borgo Vico am Comer See eine bedeutende Bildersammlung mit Portraits von Staatsmännern und Kriegshelden, darunter zwei Bilder Bronzinos, und zwar Andrea Doria als Neptun und Cosimo I. de' Medici in Rüstung.
