Primate city

Eine Primatstadt (englisch: Primate City) ist eine Großstadt, die in der Regel Hauptstadt eines Landes ist und durch überdurchschnittliche Wirtschaftskraft und Bevölkerungsentwicklung, politische Macht, ausgeprägten Handel und durch Bildungseinrichtungen eine herausragende Position innerhalb der nationalen Städtehierarchie aufweist. Eine Primatstadt bietet alle harten und weichen Standortfaktoren, viele preiswerte Arbeitskräfte und eine kaufkräftige Oberschicht. Daher siedeln sich dort oft neue Wirtschaftsbetriebe an.

Eine Primatstadt ist häufig in Entwicklungsländern anzutreffen, aber auch teilweise in Industrieländern.

Vielfach lässt sich eine Primatstadt an der Einwohneranzahl im Vergleich zu der Einwohnerzahl der nächst größeren Städte eines Landes erkennen. Kann man die Reihenfolge der Stadtgröße nach Einwohnern nahezu linear auftragen, so gibt es keine Primatstadt.
