Saiyid

Sayyid (auch Saiyid; arabisch ‏سيّد‎, persisch: Seyed, weibl.: Sayyida; kurdisch: Seyîd, weibl.: Seyyîde) ist der Ehrentitel der Nachkommen Mohammeds, des Begründers des Islams, die von ihm über seinen Enkel Husain abstammen. Sayyid bedeutet im Arabischen etwa „Herr“, eine im übrigen Orient verballhornte Variante ist Sidi. Die Nachkommen seines älteren Enkels Hasan tragen den Titel Scherif. Die Abstammung wird durch grüne bzw. schwarze Turbane sowie durch zwei besondere Haarsträhnen deutlich gemacht.

Eine weibliche Nachkommin Husseins wird Sayyida genannt, die bekannteste war seine Tochter Sayyida Sukaina bzw. deren Tochter Nafisa at-Tahira. Sie war u. a. eine der Lehrerinnen asch-Schafi'is, des Begründers der schafiitischen Rechtsschule (Madhhab) im sunnitischen Islam. Sayyids sind jedoch meistens schiitisch und deshalb vor allem im Irak und im Iran zahlreich. Hauptsiedlungsgebiet im Iran ist seit dem 7. Jahrhundert die Umgebung von Qom (Ghom).

Mirza

Nachkommen einer Sayyida bzw. Nachkommen Husains oder eines Sayyid in weiblicher Linie werden Mirza (auch Mirsa) genannt (nicht zu verwechseln mit dem Sternbild Mirza bzw. Mirzam).
