Unter einem Nebenwert versteht man

Alle übrigen Aktiengesellschaften und Aktien fallen in die Kategorie Standardwerte.

Man unterscheidet bei Nebenwerten zusätzlich zwischen

  1. Mid Caps: mittelhoher Börsenwert, in Deutschland z. B. MDAX-Teilnehmer.
  2. Small Caps: geringer Börsenwert, in Deutschland z. B. SDAX-Teilnehmer und viele in keinem Index vertretene Aktiengesellschaften.
  3. Micro Caps: Kleinstwerte, die ebenfalls in keinem Index vertreten sind. Hierunter fallen in der Regel auch sogenannte Penny-Stocks.

Es gibt zwar einige Versuche, Nebenwerte anhand des jeweiligen Börsenwerts einem dieser drei Begriffe zuzuordnen, letztlich gibt es aber keine allgemein anerkannte Definition. Die Grenzen zwischen diesen Begriffen sind daher fließend.

Da es sich in Deutschland wie international bei über 95% der börsennotierten Aktiengesellschaften um Nebenwerte handelt, bietet sich dem potenziellen Investor hier eine größere Aktienauswahl als bei Standardwerten. Allerdings ist die Analyse kleinerer Unternehmen oftmals aufwendiger, da die Finanzkommunikation bei vielen Nebenwerten weniger ausgeprägt ist als bei Standardwerten. Für Großinvestoren wie zum Beispiel Investmentgesellschaften oder institutionelle Anleger sind Nebenwerte zudem aufgrund ihrer Marktenge wenig geeignet.

Eine traditionelle Theorie besagt, dass man durch Investition in Nebenwerte höhere Gewinne erzielen könne, da die Aktien kleiner Unternehmen für Spekulationen mehr Raum ließen und stärkeren Schwankungen unterlägen als Standardwerte. Andererseits seien damit aber auch höhere Risiken verbunden. Diese Theorie beruht auf statistischen Untersuchungen historischer Kursdaten, deren Ergebnisse in der Regel nicht auf die Zukunft übertragbar sind.
