Streptococcus suis ist ein Bakterium aus der Gattung Streptococcus und verursacht die Enzootische Streptokokkenmeningitis der Schweine. S. suis ist auch humanpathogen und somit ein Zoonoseerreger!

S. suis ist grampositiv, rundlich, fakultativ anaerob und katalasenegativ. Es werden 35 Serovaren unterschieden, die zu den Lancefield-Gruppen R, S und T gehören.

Virulenzfaktoren

Die Phänotypendifferenzierung erfolgt anhand der Eiweiße MRP (muramidase released protein) und EF (extracellular factor).
