Er ist ein bekannter Skiort und hat das größte Skigebiet in den USA. Das Skigebiet ist berühmt für die „Back-Bowls“ (riesige Tiefschneekessel). 1989 und 1999 fand hier die Alpine Skiweltmeisterschaft statt.
Etwa 60 km westlich von Vail liegt der Eagle County Airport mit täglichen Verbindungen zum Denver International Airport. Saisonabhängig gibt es auch Flüge z. B. nach Chicago oder New York. Durch den Ort führt der Highway I-70.
