William Ponsonby

Sir William Ponsonby K.C.B. (* 1772; † 18. Juni 1815 bei Waterloo) war ein britischer General.

Als Generalmajor und Kommandeur der 2. (schweren) Brigade (Union Brigade) der Reserve-Kavallerie (Lord Uxbridge), führte er in der Schlacht bei Waterloo die Gegenattacke gegen die Infanterie des 1. französischen Korps des Generals Jean-Baptiste Drouet d'Erlon und fand den Tod bei der darauffolgenden Attacke der französischen Kavallerie.

Sein Tod in der Schlacht ist unter anderem auf falsche Sparsamkeit zurückzuführen. Er hatte sein bestes Pferd hinter den Linien stehen gelassen und war stattdessen auf einem älteren, schlechteren Pferd in die Schlacht geritten. Von der ungeregelt durchgehenden Attacke der Grauen Dragoner mitgerissen, war sein Pferd schließlich zu erschöpft, um ihn noch aus der Reichweite der französischen Lanzenreiter tragen zu können.[1]
