Blackthorn ist ein spanisch produzierter Western um die legendäre Figur des Butch Cassidy, der von Sam Shepard interpretiert wird. Mateo Gil inszenierte den Film 2010 größtenteils an Schausplätzen in Bolivien.

Handlung

James Blackthorn, ein alter Gringo, lebt friedlich in den Tälern von Bolivien. Er züchtet Pferde und ist mit einer Eingeborenen liiert. Er merkt, dass er alt wird und möchte zu Hause, in den Vereinigten Staaten, seine letzten Jahre verbringen. Sein eigentlicher Name ist Butch Cassidy; die Leute, die sich überhaupt noch an diesen legendären Gesetzlosen erinnern, halten ihn für tot.

Als er das Hochplateau auf seinem Weg in die alte Heimat überquert, begegnet er einem spanischen Mineningenieur, deutlich jünger als er, der nach einem Minenraub auf der Flucht ist. Da er Geld braucht, begleitet ihn Blackthorn auf dessen Flucht quer durch Bolivien. In der Härte und Einsamkeit der Wüste werden die Männer Freunde. Aber sie werden gejagt, und als sie im Niemandsland der Grenze von vielen Bewaffneten gestellt werden, müssen sie ihre wahren Beweggründe offenbaren.

Kritik

„Der Film ist weniger am Narrativen oder gar an Action interessiert als am Vorführen der wunderbaren bolivianischen Weiten und der Präsentation von Sam Shepards ergrauter, lakonischer Gegenwart.“, schreibt der Hollywood Reporter.[1] Auch Variety fand für den „klassischen minimalistischen Western“ lobende Worte.[2]

Der Film wurde beim Tribeca Film Festival 2011 uraufgeführt.[3]
