Der ehemalige Bahnhof (1896)
Die Cape Town Railway Station ist der Hauptbahnhof von Kapstadt in Südafrika. Er befindet sich im Stadtzentrum. In der Umgebung befinden sich das Kasteel de Goede Hoop sowie das Rathaus.
In dem Bahnhof starten alle Linien der Metrorail. Die Personenzüge Shosholoza Meyl verkehren täglich nach Johannesburg über Kimberley. Wöchentliche Verbindungen gibt es nach Durban (über Kimberley, Bloemfontein und Pietermaritzburg), nach East London, nach Port Elizabeth (über George und Oudtshoorn) sowie nach Queenstown. Außerdem ist der Bahnhof seit 1923 einer der beiden Endpunkte des Blue Train. Des Weiteren fahren die Züge der privaten Eisenbahngesellschaft Rovos Rail von hier nach Pretoria und George und – als Pride of Africa – nach Daressalam. In der Castle Street, südlich des Bahnhofs, befindet sich ein Busbahnhof.
Das heutige Gebäude ist ein gewölbter Zweckbau aus Beton und Glas der 1960er Jahre. In der Empfangshalle wurde eine Museumslokomotive der Hawthorn, Leslie & Company aufgestellt. Weiterhin werden im Bahnhof zahlreiche Geschäfte betrieben, zum Beispiel Lebensmittelgeschäfte oder Friseursalons. Seit 2007 wird der Bahnhof für über 400 Millionen Rand (über 40 Millionen Euro) durch den Architekten Mokena Makeka saniert. Dabei stehen im Vorfeld der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2010 die Wege, die Informationsstände, und die Sicherheit im Vordergrund. Auch soll die Fassade saniert werden. Nach dem Abschluss der Bauarbeiten wird die Museumslokomotive auf dem Bahnhofsvorplatz an der Adderley Street aufgestellt.
