Aberdeen Police Department

Das Aberdeen Police Department (APD) ist die polizeiliche Hauptdienststelle der Stadt Aberdeen im Harford County im US-Bundesstaat Maryland. Sie betreut 14.130 Einwohner.

Geschichte

Die Geschichte geht auf das Jahr 1892 zurück, als Aberdeen die Eintragung der Stadtrechte erhielt. Damals startete die APD mit einem ernannten Bailiff. Die Stadt hatte damals eine Einwohnerzahl von etwa 600.

Im Jahr 1936 zog das Department in die damals neu erbauten Stadtverwaltungsgebäude um, die am West Bel Air Avenue und Howard Street liegen. Bis zum Jahr 1940 blieb die Dienststelle ein Einmann-Betrieb. Danach wurde sie auf drei vereidigte Polizeibeamte verstärkt.

Als 1965 der Polizeichef der APD, James Benjamin Ray, nach seiner Amtszeit von 1919 bis 1965 in Rente ging, wurde das Personal auf 16 Beamte aufgestockt. James Benjamin Ray ist einer der wenigen Polizeichefs in den USA, der eine solche Funktion eine solch lange Zeitspanne inne hatte. Das Department zog nochmals um in ein umgebautes Feuerwehrhaus am West Bel Air Avenue und Parke Street.

Der letzte Umzug in einen neuen Gebäudekomplex an der Ecke Parke Street und Franklin Street fand im Jahr 2000 statt.

Der aktuelle Polizeichef ist Randy M. Rudy. Nach einer 28-jährigen Berufslaufbahn bei der Maryland State Police wurde er am 1. Februar 2000 vom Aberdeener Bürgermeister zum Polizeichef ernannt.

Aufbau des APD

Mittlerweile haben sich das Personal sowie die Aufgabengebiete des Aberdeen Police Department umfangreich erweitert. Neben einer Hundestaffel gibt es ein SWAT-Team, kriminalpolizeiliche Ermittlungsbeamte sowie einen Drogenermittlungsbeamten, der im Harford County Joint Narcotics Task Force eingegliedert ist.

Momentan ist das Department am Aufbau eines Fatal Accident Reconstruction Teams (FART), eine Art fachkundige Unfallrekonstruktionsgruppe beschäftigt. Ein weiterer Plan ist die Erschaffung einer Spurensicherung, einer sogenannten Evidence Collection Unit (CSI).
