Er hat 1.243.171 Einwohner (Stand: 24. Oktober 2007).[1] auf einer Gesamtfläche von 16.970 km². Sitz der Distriktverwaltung ist Polokwane.[2]
Benannt ist der Bezirk nach dem Wendekreis des Steinbocks (lat.: tropicus capricorni, engl.: Tropic of Capricorn), der durch den Bezirk verläuft und symbolisch auch sein Wappen teilt.[3]
