Lage

Der Diamond District befindet sich an der West 47th Street zwischen der Fifth Avenue und Sixth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Viele New Yorker Attraktionen befinden sich in Laufweite. Entlang der Sixth Avenue befinden sich einen Block nördlich Rockefeller Center und drei Blocks nördlich Radio City Music Hall, wobei die Plaza Arcade, eine Ladenpassage, die West 47th Street direkt mit dem Rockefeller Center verbindet. Entlang der Fifth Avenue befindet sich drei Blocks nördlich St. Patrick’s Cathedral und einen Block westlich befindet sich der Broadway Theater District.

Geschichte

Der Diamond District entstand als die Diamantenhändler 1941 aus Downtown Manhattan nach Midtown Manhattan umzogen. Zuvor hatten sie ihre Läden seit den 1920er Jahren in der Gegend um Canal Street und der Bowery und zugleich seit den 1930er Jahren im Financial District in der Nähe von Fulton Street und Nassau Street.

Als die Nazis in den Niederlanden und Belgien einmarschierten, versuchten Juden u. a. in die USA zu fliehen, darunter auch jene, die in Antwerpen und Amsterdam im Diamantenhandel tätig waren. Letztere ließen sich anschließend überwiegend in New York City im heutigen Diamond District nieder und blieben dort auch nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs.[1]

Wirtschaftliche Bedeutung

Bis heute ist diese Gegend eine der wichtigsten Adressen im internationalen Diamantenhandel – neben London, Antwerpen, Mumbai (Indien), Ramat Gan (Israel), Johannesburg (Südafrika) und zugleich die beste Adresse in New York, um Diamanten zu kaufen.

Der Diamond District die größte Einkaufsstraße für Diamanten in allen Größen und Formen sowie Edelsteinen weltweit. Mehr als 90 Prozent aller Diamanten, die in die USA importiert werden, gehen durch New York City und die meisten von diesen durch den Diamont District. Hier sind 2.600 verschiedene Unternehmen vertreten, die fast alle mit Diamanten oder Edelsteinen zu tun haben. [2]
