Essyllt

Essyllt [essiɬt] ist der Name einer Sagenfigur aus der walisischen Mythologie. Sie ist die Gattin des Königs March fab Meirchiawn und die Tante von Drystan fab Tallwch, der sich in sie verliebt. Im höfischen Tristan-Roman entspricht ihr die Figur der Iseut (altfranzösisch) oder Isolt, sowie Isolde (althochdeutsch).

Der Name Essyllt ist wahrscheinlich auf die ältere Form * Adsilta zurückzuführen, was die Bedeutung „die, welche man betrachtet“ hat (nach kymrisch syllu - „betrachten“). Die Namen Iseut, Isolt und Isolde sind allerdings keine Ableitungen der keltischen Form, sondern gehen auf einen ähnlich klingenden germanischen Namen zurück.
