Sie liegt in den westlichen Ausläufern der Green Mountains, etwa 20 Kilometer östlich des Lake Champlain und rund 30 Kilometer südlich der Grenze nach Kanada.
Der Ort wurde 1763 im Zuge der britischen Kolonialisierung zur Besiedlung freigegeben und wahrscheinlich nach Baron Thomas Fairfax (1693-1781) benannt, einem Weggefährten George Washingtons. Die Stadtgeschichte verlief seitdem ohne besondere Vorkommnisse.
Die 3.765 Bewohner von Fairfax (nach der Volkszählung des Jahres 2000) leben in erster Linie von Land- und Forstwirtschaft; nennenswerte Industriebetriebe sind nicht vorhanden. Tourismus ist ebenfalls nur gering vertreten und beschränkt sich in erster Linie auf die Vermietung von Blockhäusern in den umliegenden Waldgebieten.
Im Ort gibt es drei konfessionelle Gemeinden: eine römisch-katholische und zwei methodistische Kirchen. Der Ort verfügt außerdem über eine Grundschule und eine historische Gesellschaft.
Benachbarte Gemeinden sind im Nordwesten St. Albans (17 km), im Norden Fairfield (10 km), im Osten Cambridge (10 km, in Lamoille County) und im Westen Georgia (10 km). Im Süden liegt Westford (7 km) im benachbarten Chittenden County.
