Die General American Transportation Corporation (GATX) ist eine US-amerikanische Leasinggesellschaft für Schienenfahrzeuge mit Sitz in Chicago. GATX wurde 1898 gegründet, ist seit 1916 an der New Yorker Börse notiert und derzeit in den Börsenindizes Dow Jones Composite Average und Dow Jones Transportation Average vertreten.
Hauptgeschäftsfeld des in Nordamerika und Europa aktiven Unternehmens ist das verleasen und finanzieren von Lokomotiven und Eisenbahnwagen, vor allem Kesselwagen. GATX kontrolliert hierdurch einen der größten Eisenbahnwagenparks der Welt (über 160.000 Wagen und rund 1.000 Lokomotiven).[1] Darüber hinaus ist GATX im Bereich Leasing und Finanzierung von Industrieanlagen sowie See- und Binnenschiffen aktiv und ist Eigner der auf den Großen Seen operierenden American Steamship Company (ASC). Der Umsatz der Gruppe belief sich 2008 auf 1,44 Milliarden US-Dollar.
