George Polk

George Polk (* 17. Oktober 1913 in Fort Worth, Texas; † vor dem 16. Mai 1948 in Griechenland) war ein US-amerikanischer linksgerichteter Journalist.

1938 graduierte er an der University of Alaska und arbeitete bei Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS). Während des Griechischen Bürgerkriegs (1946–49) zwischen Linken und konservativer Regierung, die ab März 1947 von den USA im Rahmen der Truman-Doktrin unterstützt wurde, wurde Polk am 16. Mai 1948 erschossen aufgefunden. Er hatte zuvor unbelegt behauptet, einige Beamte im griechischen Regierungsapparat hätten bis zu einer Viertelmillion US-Dollar an Hilfsgeldern veruntreut.

Kurz nach seinem Tod schufen Journalisten die nach ihm benannten George-Polk-Preise für besondere journalistische Leistungen.
