Lyman Beecher (* 12. Oktober 1775 in New Haven; † 10. Januar 1863 in New York City) war ein US-amerikanischer presbyterianischer Pfarrer und einer der führenden Vertreter der Abstinenzbewegung. Beecher war einer der Gründer der American Temperance Society.

Leben

Beecher wurde 1775 als Sohn eines Schmiedes in New Haven geboren. Er besuchte an der renommierten Yale University in seinem Geburtsort die Yale Divinity School. Diese Berufsschule bietet theologische Ausbildungsgänge an. An dieser Schule kam er mit der Gedankenwelt Timothy Dwights in Berührung, dies beeinflusste ihn für sein gesamtes Leben.[1] Nach seiner Ausbildung dort begann er 1799 in East Hampton auf Long Island seine Berufslaufbahn als Pfarrer. Erstmals bekannt wurde Beecher als er 1806 eine Predigt über den Zweikampf zwischen Alexander Hamilton und Aaron Burr hielt. Vier Jahre später wendete er sich dem Kalvinismus zu. Bekannt wurde er auch für seine antikatholische Einstellung. 1832 wurde Beecher Rektor des Lane Theological Seminary, einer presbyterianischen Predigerschule in Cincinnati, Ohio.[2]

1851 ging Beecher zunächst nach Boston und schließlich kehrte er 1856 nach Brooklyn, New York zurück, wo er die letzten Jahre seines Lebens verbrachte.
