Neil Smith (Geograph)

Neil Smith (* 1954 in Leith, Schottland) ist ein schottischer Geograph, Stadtforscher und Anthropologe. Er ist Professor am Graduate Center der City University of New York.

Smith graduierte an der University of St. Andrews zum Bachelor of Sciences und wurde an der Johns Hopkins University bei David Harvey zum Ph. D. promoviert. Als Robert Lincoln McNeil Scholar, dem Austauschprogramm der Universität Saint Andrews, forschte er an der University of Pennsylvania. Später lehrte er an der Columbia University und der Rutgers University.

Sein Forschungsschwerpunkt sind die Schnittmengen von Raum, Natur, Sozialtheorie und Geschichte. In seinem Hauptwerk von 1984 argumentiert Smith, dass ungleiche räumliche Entwicklung eine Funktion der prozeduralen Logik des Kapitalmarktes sei, Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft also Raum „produzieren“.^[1][2]

Smith veröffentlichte Theorien über Gentrifizierung von Innenstädten als wirtschaftlichen, nicht sozialen, Prozess, der von den Preisen städtischen Baugrundes und Spekulation getrieben ist, nicht durch eine kulturelle Präferenz für das Leben in der Stadt. Sein Aufsatz Toward a Theory of Gentrification: A Back to the City Movement by Capital, not People aus dem Jahr 1979 wurde mehr als 300 Mal zitiert.
