In Australien und Deutschland erschien es am 12. Februar, in Großbritannien am 15. Februar und in den USA am 2. März 2010. Es wurde 2009 von Associated Independent Recording und den Real World Studios aufgenommen und von Gabriel zusammen mit Bob Ezrin produziert. Die Orchester-Arrangements übernahm der neuseeländische Komponist John Metcalfe.

Hintergrund

Das Album ist ein Coveralbum mit mehr oder weniger bekannten Songs, die von Peter Gabriel mit Hilfe von Orchesterarrangements neu umgesetzt wurden. Die Idee hinter Scratch My Back ist, dass die Originalinterpreten der von Peter Gabriel ausgewählten Stücke im Gegenzug Lieder von Gabriel in einer eigenen Interpretation vortragen. Dieses Material soll auf einem demnächst erscheinenden Album veröffentlicht werden. Der Arbeitstitel für dieses Album lautet I'll Scratch Yours.

Das Gesamttitel des Projekts Scratch My Back - I'll Scratch Yours (engl.:„kratz du meinen Rücken, dann kratz ich deinen“ bzw. „eine Hand wäscht die andere“) betont die Gegenseitigkeit der Neuaufnahmen.
