Bonnie Blue Flag

Bonnie Blue Flag ist ein Marschierlied, welches mit den Konföderierten Staaten von Amerika in Zusammenhang gebracht wird. Der Text des Liedes wurde am 9. Januar 1861 von Harry McCarthy gedichtet, nachdem der Bundesstaat Mississippi an diesem Tag aus der Union (USA) ausgetreten war. An diesem Datum hisste Mississippi eine blaue Flagge mit dem einzelnen weißen Stern, als Zeichen der Trennung von der Union. Diese Flagge wurde aber schon 1810 in Westflorida verwendet.

Dieses Lied war eines der populärsten Lieder in den CSA oder Konföderierten Staaten von Amerika während des Bürgerkriegs, und war, neben "Dixie", so etwas wie die inoffizielle Nationalhymne der Konföderation. Es wurde zum ersten Mal von Marion McCarthy, der Schwester des Komponisten, vorgestellt.

Soldaten der New Orleans Militärakademie sangen dieses Lied erstmals im September 1861. Von dort an wurde es vor allem von Soldaten der Südstaaten gesungen und in verschiedenen Shows vorgeführt.

Für die ersten zwei Zeilen des Liedes gibt es eine Alternativ-Version:

We are a band of brothers, and native to the soil,

Fighting for our liberty with treasure, blood and toil.

Diese Version rückt den Kampf um die staatlichen Rechte im Vordergrund, während die andere Version mehr auf Eigentumsrechte (d.h. Sklaven) hinweist.

Es ist immer noch umstritten, welches nun die historisch korrekte Version ist. Anhänger beider Versionen beschuldigen sich gegenseitig des Revisionismus

Trivia

In dem Film Gods and Generals wird das Lied von Südstaatensoldaten im Feldlager gesungen. Auch in der preisgekrönten Fernsehserie Der Amerikanische Bürgerkrieg wird die Melodie an zahlreichen Stellen als Hintergrundmusik verwendet.
