Daud Khan

Mohammed Daoud Khan, Paschtu:‏محمد داود خان‎‎, (* 18. Juli 1909 in Kabul; † 27. April 1978 in Kabul bei einem Putsch erschossen) war ein afghanischer Staatsmann.

Als Sohn von Mohammed Aziz Khan und Enkel von Mohammed Yusuf Khan war Mohammed Daoud Khan ein Angehöriger der Baraksai-Dynastie und ein Neffe des afghanischen Königs Mohammed Nadir Shah.

Nach Schulbesuchen und der Absolvierung einer militärischen Ausbildung war er von 1932 bis 1937 Provinzgouverneur und danach in weiteren diplomatischen und militärischen Ämtern vertreten.

Im Rahmen einer familieninternen Aufgabenverteilung wurde er 1950 zum Verteidigungsminister ernannt und war danach von 1953 bis 1963 Ministerpräsident des Landes. In seiner Regierungszeit kommt es zur Annäherung des Landes an die Sowjetunion und die westlichen Industrieländer. Auch galt er als Befürworter der Angliederung der im Nordwesten Pakistans gelegenen Gebiete mit ihrer überwiegend Paschtu sprechenden Bevölkerung.

Sein Vetter, König Mohammed Sahir Schah, setzte ihn 1963 ab. Trotz der seit 1968 stattgefundenen Annäherung zwischen beiden stürzte er am 17. Juli 1973 die Monarchie unter Mohammed Sahir Schah und machte Afghanistan zur Republik. Am 27. April 1978 fiel er dann selbst einem Staatsstreich zum Opfer. Sein Nachfolger wurde Nur Muhammad Taraki.
