Estuary English

Als Estuary English (engl. estuary: Mündung) bezeichnet man einen Dialekt der englischen Sprache, der ursprünglich im Südosten Englands (im Mündungsgebiet der Themse) gesprochen wurde und derzeit dabei ist, den Rang eines Soziolekts einzunehmen.

Ursprünglich auf das Gebiet der Grafschaften Kent und Essex konzentriert, teilt der Dialekt eine Anzahl von phonetischen Merkmalen mit dem Londoner Cockney, so etwa die Verwendung von glottal stops und des Fugen-R. Andererseits ist seine momentane Entwicklung gerade im Bereich der Grammatik stark durch den Einfluss der Received Pronunciation (Standard English, Queen's English) geprägt.

Bei den Verfechtern der Received Pronunciation gilt das Estuary als Stilbruch, da seine Sprecher die Herkunft von einem Unterklasseakzent nicht verleugnen, sondern dies sogar als Ausdruck von Authentizität verstanden wissen wollen. Dennoch hat es sich in den jungen und gutverdienenden Schichten Londons und anderer Großstädte einen gewissen Status erworben, nicht zuletzt durch die Verwendung durch den ehemaligen Premierminister Tony Blair und andere Prominente. Ob es allerdings eine längerfristige Chance hat, von einer Milieu- zu einer Verkehrssprache zu werden, ist derzeit noch fraglich.
