Ethiopian Television

Ethiopian Television (ETV) ist ein äthiopischer Fernsehsender, betrieben von der äthiopischen Regierung. Gemeinsam mit Radio Ethiopia bildet ETV die Ethiopian Radio and Television Agency. Aufgrund des gesetzlichen Verbots von privaten Medien ist es der einzige landesweite Fernsehsender. Gesendet wird in den äthiopischen Sprachen Amharisch, Oromo und Tigrinya, Somali und Afar sowie in Englisch und Arabisch.

Geschichte

Äthiopisches Fernsehen wurde 1964 mit Unterstützung der (damals) britischen Firma Thomson eingeführt. Anlass hierfür war ein Kongress der Organisation für Afrikanische Einheit (OAU), der im selben Jahr in Addis Abeba stattfand. Ausstrahlung in Farbe gibt es seit 1982.

Programm

Das Programm beinhaltet Nachrichten, Sport, Musik und verschiedene Unterhaltungssendungen, wie Ethiopian Idol, dem äthiopischen Pendant zu American Idol (DSDS in Deutschland). In den letzten Jahren übertrug ETV auch vermehrt Fußballspiele verschiedener europäischer Ligen (2007 die Primera División, 2008 die englische Premier League), sowie einige internationale Spiele.
