Exit-Option

Exit und Voice (dt. etwa "Abwanderung und Widerspruch") ist ein soziologisches Konzept von Albert Otto Hirschman, das zwei grundlegende Reaktionsmöglichkeiten auf institutionellen Rückgang unterscheidet: „Exit“ oder „Voice“.

Das Grundkonzept

Mitglieder einer Organisation haben grundlegend drei Möglichkeiten zu reagieren, wenn sie feststellen, dass die Organisation in Qualität oder Nutzen für ihre Mitglieder abnimmt: Sie können (1) die Beziehung zur Organisation auflösen (exit), oder sie können (2) versuchen, die Beziehung durch Kommunikation, Beschwerde, Änderungswünsche etc. (voice) wieder zu konsolidieren, oder (3) die Organisation dennoch unterstützen (vgl. Loyalität). Mischformen treten auf, oft durch Reaktionsaufschub gekennzeichnet.

Exit und Voice auf politischer Ebene

Mitglieder einer Nation können auf ein zunehmend repressives politisches System mit Emigration (exit) oder Protest (voice) reagieren. So reagierten beispielsweise die Bürger der DDR mit Emigration in den Westen, da sie die Option der Kommunikation mit dem politischen System zur Verbesserung ihrer Situation als nicht wirkungsvoll ansahen. Erst 1989 griffen die Bürger auf die Voice-Option zurück indem sie sich zu Massenprotesten versammelten. Der Faktor voice – die Montagsdemonstrationen – war 1989 ein wesentlicher Faktor der Systemdesintegration, welche zum Fall der Berliner Mauer führte.
