Der Cape Town International Airport ist ein internationaler Flughafen in Kapstadt, Südafrika. Er ist der zweitgrößte Flughafen Südafrikas und befindet sich 22 Kilometer östlich von Kapstadt. Er dient als Drehkreuz für South African Airways und ist das touristische Tor zu Südafrika.

Im Jahr 2004 hatte der Flughafen ein Fluggastaufkommen von 6,1 Millionen Passagieren. 22 Fluggesellschaften haben Kapstadt International im Flugplan, darunter sind Lufthansa (Frankfurt), LTU (Düsseldorf), British Airways, KLM, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates und Homecarrier South African Airways.

CTIA wird von Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) betrieben, die auch andere große Flughäfen des Landes betreiben. Zuvor wurden alle Flughäfen durch das Ministerium Department of Transport betrieben, das heute noch Hauptaktionär sind.

Geschichte

Der Flughafen wurde im Oktober 1955 als DF Malan Airport eröffnet, benannt nach dem früheren südafrikanischen Premierminister Daniel François Malan. Im Jahr 1997 wurde im Rahmen eines längerfristigen Entwicklungsprogramms mit dem Bau eines neuen, internationalen Terminals begonnen, dieses wurde dann 2003 fertiggestellt. Der Flughafen hat im Jahr 2005 circa 6,8 Millionen Passagiere abgefertigt. Im Zuge der Fußballweltmeisterschaften 2010 wird der Flughafen aktuell um ein weiteres Terminal, Parkhäuser und eine An- und Abfahrtsbrücke in Hochbahnausführung erweitert. Im Rahmen des bis 2017 laufenden Entwicklungsprogramms sollen 2 Satellitenterminals erbaut werden, die Kapazität soll hierdurch auf 15 Mio. Passagiere pro Jahr gesteigert werden. Auch die gegenwärtig kaum genutzte Start- und Landebahn 16/34 (1701 m) soll verlängert werden.
