Francis Asbury (* 20. August 1745 in Handsworth bei Birmingham, England; † 31. März 1816 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia) war einer der ersten beiden Bischöfe der Bischöflichen Methodistenkirche in den Vereinigten Staaten.[1]

Francis Asbury wurde in einfachen Verhältnissen geboren. Mit 16 Jahren bekehrte er sich zu den Methodisten und wurde ein örtlicher Prediger. Von 1766 an war er reisender Prediger in Bedfordshire, Colchester und Wiltshire in England. 1771 erbot er sich, nach Amerika zu gehen.

Auch dort war er reisender Prediger in New York, Philadelphia und Delaware. Nach dem Unabhängigkeitskrieg war er der einzige aus England stammende Methodistenprediger, der noch in den Vereinigten Staaten aktiv war. Er dehnte seine Reisen bis über die Appalachen aus.

Asbury war 1784 eine der zentralen Figuren der sogenannten Christmas Conference in Baltimore, die als Gründungsversammlung der Methodistischen Kirche in Amerika gilt.[2] John Wesley ließ ihn 1784 durch Thomas Coke zum Diakon, Ältesten und Bischof ordinieren. Während der nächsten dreißig Jahre leitete Asbury unermüdlich die schnell wachsende amerikanische Methodistenkirche, wobei er praktisch ständig unterwegs war.

Bei seiner Ankunft in Amerika gab es dort 550 Methodisten in New York und Philadelphia, bei seinem Tod waren es 250.000, mit 700 ordinierten Predigern.

Asbury starb in Virginia und wurde in Baltimore begraben.
