Gregory La Cava

Gregory La Cava (* 10. März 1892 in Towanda, Pennsylvania; † 1. März 1952 in Malibu) war ein US-amerikanischer Filmregisseur und Cartoonist.

Karriere

Gregory La Cava kam während des Ersten Weltkriegs als Cartoonist nach Hollywood Er zeichnete für Trickfilme von Walter Lantz, so bei The Katzenjammer Kids und Mutt and Jeff. Später arbeitete er als Cutter für die Hearst Comic Film International, um ab Mitte der 1920er Jahre auch selbst Regie zu führen.

Mit dem Aufkommen des Tonfilms wurde er rasch für seine leichte Inszenierungsweise und seine exzellente Schauspielerführung bekannt. Nachdem er 1933 mit Gabriel Over the With House ein gelungene Satire über Politik und Bestechlichkeit gedreht hatte, wurde er im Folgejahr mit zwei prestigeträchtigen Aufgaben betraut: The Affairs of Cellini war der erste große Film, den Darryl F. Zanuck für seine neue Gesellschaft 20th Century produzierte; in What Every Woman Knows gab Helen Hayes ihre vielleicht Leistung als Schauspielerin.

Am bekanntesten ist auch heute noch sein Film My Man Godfrey aus dem Jahr 1936 mit Carole Lombard und William Powell in den Hauptrollen. Im Jahr darauf wurde die stagnierende Karriere von Katharine Hepburn durch La Cavas Filmdrama Bühneneingang (Stage Door) neu belebt, und es gelang ihm hierdurch, auf Hepburns komödiantisches Talent aufmerksam zu machen. Mit Ginger Rogers, die in Stage Door die zweite Hauptrolle spielte, drehte er noch zwei weitere Filme: die Komödie Fifth Avenue Girl aus dem Jahr 1939, in der ein angetrunkener Millionär die vom Regen durchnässte Rogers auffordert: „Why don't you step out of those wet clothes and into a dry Martini?“, und Primrose Path, der 1940 in seiner Schilderung von Prostitution und häuslicher Gewalt bis an die Grenzen des seinerzeit von der Zensur Erlaubten ging.

Nach zwei wenig erfolgreichen Filmen bei Universal mit Irene Dunne, Unfinished Business und Lady in a Jam, geriet La Cava in große private Probleme und zog sich für einige Jahre völlig aus dem Filmgeschäft zurück. Sein letzter Film Living in a Big Way, für dessen Dreh er 1947 über zehn Monate brauchte, erwies sich als Flop. Die Dreharbeiten zu One Touch of Venus danach konnte er nicht mehr beenden.

In sein Buch People Will Talk aus dem Jahr 1985 hat der Filmhistoriker John Kobal ein Interview mit dem Schauspieler Joel McCrea aufgenommen, in dem dieser in großer Offenheit über seine Freundschaft zu La Cava und über dessen private Probleme sprach.

La Cava wurde zweimal für einen Oscar als bester Regisseur nominiert.
