Guwahati (Assamesisch: গুৱাহাটী, Guvāhāṭī; früher Gauhati) ist eine Stadt im indischen Bundesstaat Assam am südlichen Ufer des Brahmaputra. Mit etwa 960.000 Einwohnern (Volkszählung 2011) ist sie die mit Abstand größte Ansiedlung im Nordosten Indiens.

Der nur 10 Kilometer vom Stadtzentrum entfernte Vorort Dispur ist Sitz der Regierung von Assam. Zu den wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten Guwahatis gehören der Kamakhya-Tempel - eine Einrichtung des tantristischen Shaktismus, die viele Pilger anzieht - und das Assam State Museum mit großer archäologischer und ethnografischer Sammlung.

Brahmaputra in Guwahati

Guwahati beherbergt den Gauhati High Court[3], einen zoologischen Garten, Lebensmittel- und petrochemische Industrie. Der Flughafen (Lok-Priya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport) liegt 20 km südwestlich der Stadt und ist nach dem früheren Chief Minister von Assam Gopinath Bordoloi benannt. Seit 1994 hat die Stadt neben der Gauhati University[4] auch ein Indian Institute of Technology.

Guwahati ist Sitz eines katholischen Erzbistums.
