Das Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore ist eine indische Elite-Forschungseinrichtung hauptsächlich für graduierte Wissenschaftler.

Es bietet über 2000 Wissenschaftlern in 48 Departments Möglichkeiten für Postdoktoranden-Aufenthalte und für Doktorarbeiten - von Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik über molekulare Biophysik bis Management. Das IISc hat von allen akademischen Institutionen in Indien die meisten Veröffentlichungen und wurde vom Weltrang aller Universitäten, den das Institut SJTU in der VR China erhebt, 2004 als beste Universität Indiens aufgeführt. [1]

Gegründet wurde das IISc zu britischen Kolonialzeiten auf Anregung des indischen Industriellen Jamshedji Tata mit Beratung und Unterstützung durch den englischen Nobelpreisträger Prof. William Ramsay; 1909 nahm es die Arbeit auf, der erste indische Direktor war der Nobelpreisträger Sir C. V. Raman.
