Laureate Education, Inc. (NASDAQ: LAUR) ist ein im Jahr 1998 als Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc. gegründeter privater Bildungskonzern mit Sitz in Baltimore/Maryland, USA. Im Jahr 2004 erfolgte die Namensänderung in Laureate Education.

Geschichte

Die Holding betreibt Privatuniversitäten und Hochschulen in 18 Ländern. Laureate Education ist auch im Bereich Teleunterricht tätig und erwarb 2001 41 Prozent an der Fernuniversität Walden University.

Laureate war lange börsennotiert, wurde aber im Februar 2007 von einem Konsortium von Beteiligungsgesellschaften übernommen (Kaufpreis 3.8 Milliarden US-Dollar). Die Investorengruppe wurde vom CEO des Unternehmens, Douglas Becker, angeführt. Zum Konsortium gehören Kohlberg Kravis Roberts; Citigroup Private Equity; S.A.C. Capital Management, SPG Partners; Bregal Investments; Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec; Sterling Capital; Makena Capital; Torreal, und Southern Cross Capital.[1]

2008 stieg das Unternehmen in den deutschen Markt ein, indem es 76 % an der privaten Fachhochschule Business and Information Technology School in Iserlohn erwarb.

Selbstdarstellung

„(Laureate Education) betreibt weltweit ein Netzwerk von 27 Präsenzhochschulen und zwei Fernuniversitäten. In Europa ist der Hochschulanbieter unter anderem in Frankreich, Spanien und der Schweiz vertreten. Aktuell sind 405.000 Studenten eingeschrieben, beschäftigt werden rund 23.000 Mitarbeiter. Das mit einem Eigenkapital von 1,1 Milliarden Dollar ausgestattete Unternehmen hat den Umsatz kontininuierlich gesteigert, und zwar zuetzt auf umgerechnet rund 190 Millionen Euro.[2]“
