Leopold Tyrmand

Leopold Tyrmand (* 16. Mai 1920 in Warschau; † 19. März 1985 in Rockford) war ein polnischer Schriftsteller, Publizist und Jazz-Iniatiator.

Mit dem Jazz war Leopold Tyrmand 1938 in Berührung, als er Student in Paris war, wo er den Hot Club de Jazz besuchte und das Duke Ellington Orchestra hörte. Tyrmand spielte dann eine wichtige Rolle beim Aufbau der Nachkriegs-Jazzszene in Polen. Er gründete 1946 den Warschauer Club des YMCA. Seiner Initiative war es zu verdanken, dass am 30. Mai 1947 im Warschauer YMCA-Club das erste öffentliche Jazzkonzert unter dem Motto "Jam Session" stattfand, bei dem u.a der Saxophonist Charles Bovery, die Sängerin Jeanne Johnstone Schiele, der Klarinettist Juliusz Skowronki, der Pianist Wieslaw Machan und der Schlagzeuger Januaz "Mrek" Bylinski mitwirkten. Den YMCA-Clubs (weitere befanden sich in Krakau und Łódź) war jedoch kein langes Leben beschieden; sie wurden 1947 aufgelöst, als die Kulturbehörden den Jazz als "bourgeois, dekadent, verdächtig und schädlich" deklassierten. Tyrmand war dann 1954 Schirmherr des ersten polnischen Jazzfestivals ("1. Krakauer Allerseelen-festival").

Seine regimekritischen Bücher wurden in Polen verboten, erschienen aber in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und Großbritannien als Übersetzungen. Er emigrierte 1966 in die USA, wo er in The New Yorker und The New York Times Magazine publizierte.
