Lowell ist eine Stadt in Middlesex County im US-Bundesstaat Massachusetts in den USA. 2000 betrug die Einwohnerzahl 105.167 Personen.

Das Stadtgebiet wurde ursprünglich von Pennacook-Indianern besiedelt. 1836 wurde Lowell offiziell als Stadt anerkannt. Die Stadt ist nach Francis Cabot Lowell benannt.

Wirtschaft

Lowell ist Sitz der globalen Zentrale von "Konarka Technologies, Inc.", einem Hersteller von Dünnschicht-Solarzellen aus Polymeren. Das Kernteam von "Konarka" fand sich im Jahr 2000 auf Betreiben der US-Armee zusammen, um photovoltaische Produkte für Soldaten zu entwickeln. Da der Durchbruch in der Forschung nicht lange auf sich warten ließ, konnte "Konarka" schon im Jahre 2001 als kommerzielles Unternehmen an den Start gehen und hat seitdem schon drei Niederlassungen in Europa gegründet.

Vom 1. bis 9. April 2006 fanden in Lowell die Curling-Weltmeisterschaften der Herren statt.

Der bekannteste Sportverein der Stadt waren die Lowell Devils (bis 2005/06 Lowell Lock Monsters) aus der (AHL).

Der Baseballclub Lowell Spinners spielt semiprofessionell in der Class A Short Season der Minor League Baseball als ein Farmteam der Boston Red Sox.
