Me Against the World ist ein Hip-Hop-Album des ermordeten US-Rappers Tupac Shakur. Es wurde am 14. März 1995 veröffentlicht und erreichte Rang eins der US-Billboard 200. Skurril ist, dass Tupac zur Zeit der Veröffentlichung im Gefängnis saß.

Das Album wurde kurz nach einem Attentat auf Shakur aufgenommen, weshalb es sehr introspektiv klingt und emotionalere (Paranoia, Liebe, Nihilismus, Verzweiflung) und religiösere Inhalte als seine vorherigen Alben aufweist.[1]

Erfolg und Bedeutung

Das Album verkaufte sich in den USA allein in der ersten Woche mehr als 240.000 Mal, blieb vier Wochen an der Spitze der Billboard Charts und wurde mit Doppel-Platin ausgezeichnet.[2] In den deutschen Charts stieg Me Against the World bis auf Platz 23 und konnte sich 14 Wochen in den Top 100 halten.[3]

Es bekam bereits zu seiner Veröffentlichung hauptsächlich positive Kritiken, mittlerweile wird es als Klassiker gehandelt. Das Album bekam 5 „Mics“,[4] die Höchstwertung, vom Hip-Hop-Magazin The Source und wurde in dessen Liste der „100 Best Rap Albums“ aufgenommen.[5] Von About.com wurde es auf Platz 9 der „10 Essential Hip-Hop Albums“ gewählt.[6]

Singles

Als Singles wurden Dear Mama (#9 der Billboard Hot 100), So Many Tears (#44) und Temptations (#68) veröffentlicht. Shakur ist aufgrund seines damaligen Gefängnisaufenthaltes in keinem der Videos zu sehen, in Temptations spielen dafür unter anderen Ice-T, Coolio, Salt’N’Pepa, Warren G, B-Real und Jada Pinkett-Smith zu seinen Ehren mit.
