Melanopsin ist ein Protein der Opsin-Familie, das zuerst in Fröschen als Teil der Lumineszenzwahrnehmung identifiziert wurde. Es kommt bei Fröschen in den Melanozyten der Haut, den Augen und im Gehirn vor. Bei Menschen wurde es nur in den Augen gefunden, wo es zur Wahrnehmung der circadianen Rhythmik und zum Pupillenreflex beiträgt.[1]

In der Netzhaut des Auges wird es in einer Untergruppe der retinalen Ganglienzellen (RGCs) produziert, welche lichtsensitiv sind. Diese Untergruppe sendet Axone direkt in den Nucleus suprachiasmaticus (SCN), der den inneren Zeitgeber des Gehirns beheimatet. Untersuchungen zeigen eine Beteiligung von Melanopsin an der lichtabhängigen Unterdrückung der Melatonin-Ausschüttung der Epiphyse (Chronobiologie) und somit einen Zusammenhang mit Aufgaben der inneren Uhr.
